Thursday wasn't a great day for me. It kicked off with a terrible dose of man flue and in review am amazed I managed to endure at all. The morning didn't get that much better as I then spent what felt like an eternity driving around Northampton General Hospital desperately struggling to park so that my son could turn up at his hearing test consultation on time. With these and many more mild irritants behind me I was at least looking forward to one element of my day, visiting my local colleges photography course open day, more explicitly I'd been guaranteed a hands on demonstration by Hasselblad's area sales team of their recent drool inducing digital camera line up, the H4D series.

Well I'll brazenly accept what a dazzling piece of machinery this camera is, as with all previous Hasselbads (I've been lucky enough to own several) the build quality and ergonomics are just awesome, a bench mark for all other companies to follow etc etc etc... but this isn't a review article. What has been annoying me and by all accounts many other photographers, judging by the ones I met the other night, is this apparent mega pixel mania. This insane and down right inaccurate obsession with the pixel count as a measure of the quality of a camera and therefore the photographer.

This isn't as an attack on any one individual camera manufacturer, at least Hasselblad point their cameras at high end professionals whom could at least now and again utilise all those 60 megapixels on a billboard poster or something as equally substantial, all camera manufacturers are at it! When did you last shoot a 48 or 96 sheet poster? When did you last do a print bigger than say A4? In fact when did you last do a print at all?

I've been privileged enough to shoot for customers that have required billboard posters and exhibited in galleries with sizable prints all whilst shooting under the acute gaze of top London art directors. Since taking a step back from the advertising world but still continuing to photograph in a commercial environment where expectations are high I have seldom shot anything that the client expected to be printed bigger than A4. As a matter of fact after assessing last years commissions I can conclude that at least 75% of this commercial work will ever go near a printing press, instead they will continue to be firmly in the virtual world such as a clients internet website or email marketing campaign!

After shooting on just about every sort and size of camera format over the years from a standard 35mm negative to a wonderful 10x8 transparency I now opt to shoot on a paltry 12 mega pixel DSLR, unless of course when the job demands a specifically bigger file size. Guess what? I've never had any problems or concerns about the image quality! What I have to do is use all my know-how and understanding obtained from years of photographic training and work experience combined with the unique 'eye' I've cultivated as a result, to capture files that are of a commercially appealing quality. The message I'm hoping to hammer home is that these shots would be no better

I regularly peruse through my trade periodicals and indeed fantasize over owning the newest and greatest camera gadget, but I strive to overcome the desire to upgrade purely on the notion of acquiring greater picture quality. Image quality is not governed by pixel count or more specifically file size, that is a fact. There are endless challenges affecting the excellence of the eventual photo not least the actual talent of the guy squeezing the shutter. Think about the shots that have most sparked you or made you go wow and I can guarantee you that many of those shots were not captured on cameras of any better physical quality than even a modest modern day digital camera.

Digital cameras have grown to be quite exceptional in the amount of bang you get for your buck and have served as a great equalizer in the way that photography is no longer simply a rich mans hobby. Select your camera system (don't agonize), purchase a few good books and then get out there and use it. Try to discount those highbrow camera geeks you'll discover on any online blog and definitely dismiss the greedy camera manufacturers cries that bigger is better, its not!

The History of Die-Cast Trucks

Die-cast truck models have existed nearly as long as the trucks they were modeled after. Improvements in industrial die-casting and metallurgy have benefited the die-cast toy vehicle industry since its beginnings in the early 20th century. The purpose and marketing of the toys themselves has changed as well. However, the collection of these die-cast vehicle replicas remains a widespread hobby with ever growing appeal.

Early Die-Cast Trucks

The earliest die-cast toys were marketed in the early 20th century. The first model designs were simple and crude, consisting of metal car or truck bodies with no interior structures or windshields. Vehicle models were cast from a zinc-aluminum alloy called Zamak. The Zamak alloy often contained impurities, and was prone to cracking or degradation over time and with handling. Because of this fact, it is difficult to find die-cast trucks or other vehicle types from this era in good condition. The first manufacturers of die-cast vehicles included Meccano's Dinky Toys line in England and Dowst Brothers' Tootsie Toys line in the United States.

The production of die-cast toys all but ceased during World War II as raw materials were being diverted towards the war effort. However the innovations in metallurgy and production tooling developed during the war provided practical benefits to the toy industry in the post-war era. In 1947, Lensey began manufacturing the Matchbox series of vehicles, which would become the most widely recognized die cast vehicle brand in the world. Mattel's Hotwheels brand arrived in 1968 and challenged the dominance of Hotwheels. Both Matchbox and Hotwheels vehicles were designed on a 1:64 scale.

Marketing and Die-Cast Trucks

In the 1960s, marketers began to develop branded vehicles as advertising. These vehicles would bear a company name or logo, and the goal was to influence the buying power of the parents. In the 1980s, large numbers of adults had begun collecting die-cast trucks as a hobby, and the manufacturers responded by generating more precise replica models of many vehicles, since the adult hobbyist was willing to pay more money than the parent of a child. Larger scale sizes, such as 1:18 or 1:12 were introduced as collectables and marketed towards adults.

While trucks had always been a part of the die-cast vehicle market, they gained a large foothold in the 1970s. Manufacturers such as Matchbox and Corgi released multiple versions of the same vehicles, branded in many different ways. Trucks were perfect items for customization, and many bore the branding of large companies.

The economic downturn of the 1980s saw the disappearance of many of the popular die-cast truck brands. Some of the brand names were reborn within new companies. For example, when Lensey went bankrupt, the Matchbox name changed hands a few times, and is now owned by Mattel, who markets Matchbox vehicles in parallel with its Hotwheels line.

Today, die-cast vehicles fall primarily into two markets: toys geared towards children and precise models geared towards adults. Both markets continue to be strong and new versions of both toys and models continue to be released regularly.

Did You Know That The Sun Can Create Beautiful Fabric

Look around your house and garage. Maybe even something as boring as a gasket can make a beautiful design in fabric.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? And maybe a gasket is a silly example, but how about the grill from a barbeque? Maybe some feathers, leaves, shafts of wheat, or even a design made with masking tape.

Pretty much anything will do, although the results are better if the object is flat and will hold still for 10-15 minutes. So, for example, a live halibut, although flat, probably wouldn't be a good choice for this kind of art.

But, back to our other examples - suppose you took 1/2" wide masking tape and made a plaid type of design with it, and could then turn that into the blue and white of a fabric design.

It's all very possible, and has been done for hundreds of years, thanks to Sir John Herschel. You see, Sir John was an English mathematician, astronomer, chemist, experimental photographer and inventor. He was also the father of 12 children and the son of Sir William Herschel, the famous astronomer.

In short, he was a brilliant, busy guy. And maybe as a method of entertaining one of his many children, he discovered that by soaking paper or cloth with the right chemicals, and then exposing it to the sun, he could create permanent images in a beautiful assortment of blue colors - thus the cyanotype, more commonly known as a blueprint, was born.

This was back in 1842, and quickly one of his neighbors used this new process to create art prints. It didn't take long for fabric artists to create fabric art using the same process, which we know as sunprints.

Sunprints are easy to make, and you don't even need to be a chemist to make one. And, you don't need to store any chemicals. It is easy to find pre-treated fabric to make your sunprint, yet the process is basically the same, and your result can look modern, or take on an antique look

The pre-treated fabric should come in special packaging that prevents it from being exposed to the light. Developing the "picture" on a sunprint is basically the same as developing a photograph - one of the old fashioned kind, that is. Digital photography is something different.

Basically, you create the design of your choice, using objects - toothpicks, pressed flowers, stencils of various types, even black and white photographs - then you place your design on top of the pre-treated fabric. If you can place a piece of glass on top of your design, it will make the images sharper. If the glass wobbles around, leave it off.

Once everything is set, you take your creation out into the sun and place it in direct sunlight. The length of time needed will vary according to the direction of the sun and the temperature. But 5-10 minutes on a warm, sunny day or 15-30 minutes on cooler days should be enough to make a good sunprint.

Once the blueprint has been exposed, remove the objects, rinse the fabric and then lay it flat to dry (out of the sun). After the fabric is dry, it is ready to use.

And how do you use it?

If you have created an overall design, you could cut the fabric up and use it in patches for your quilt.

Possibly you created a design with leaves and flowers that will make its own quilt block, and you can make a nature quilt.

When my son was in third grade, his class made sunprints and each one of the children got to take theirs home as a treasure. I didn't think of it at the time, but each of those could have been a block in a quilt presented to the teacher at the end of the school year.

Each quilter in your quilt group could contribute a sunprint block for a quilt. Sashing between the blocks, and an interesting border are enough to make a great quilt - maybe even something for a charity auction.

Sunprints are so fun and easy, every quilter should make at least one, even if it turns into nothing more than a simple wall hanging in a bathroom.
